Chairman's Report 18 May

Bernard Hughes18 May - 21:04

A brilliant win for the Women - and four Saturday wins

A busy week of cricket.

First, to catch up with last Sunday, as my report came out too early for these results. The men’s team lost to The Blues – meanwhile the women’s side won both their games in last Sunday’s softball tournament. Today they played Shepherds Bush in the hardball league and won a thrilling victory, making 157 in their 20 overs (Kelly Pike 57) and kept Shepherds Bush to 151-8 – with debutant junior Alba Pomroy taking a brilliant 4-23, including a tight last over to see us home. Well played everyone! Meanwhile the Sunday men’s team got a draw, and close to a brilliant win. Southwark Park made a decent 248-8 in 40 and we finished on 233-7 in 38, Zach Fry making 110 and Dusty Dyson 44.

On Saturday we continued our good start to the league season. The 1s made it two wins in a row, with a no nonsense defeat of Bessborough. We posted 208, largely thanks to Tom Flavell’s 96 from 85 balls. We then bowled them out for 155, with 4 wickets for Saqlain Shaikh.

The 2s won the most exciting game of the weekend. We bowled out a strong Harrow Town side for 143 but were in trouble at 65-6. Cue a brilliant fightback stand between Perry Pearce (52) and David Boothroyd. Skipper Charlie Aarons, struggling with sickness, came in to see us home to a massive win, by 2 wickets.

The 3s lost to a strong Hornsey side. Our very decent 251-7 was anchored by Will Hayes’ 137, but wasn’t close to being enough as they chased down for 2 in 28 overs.

The 4s played the 5s in an interclub game that was in the balance for a long time. The 5s made a very competitive 218-8, thanks to Jim Yorath’s excellent 65 and Nouman Tahir’s 46. After an early wobble the 4s saw it home for 3 wickets, with an unbeaten 50 for Haseeb Shahid.

The 6s game was conceded late by Ealing, so the 6s register their first points of the season.

In the juniors, the U10s lost to Ealing, but it was great to get that side out for the first time this year. The U11s put up a really good chase, also against Ealing, but lost narrowly in an impressive performance. The U9s continued their unbeaten run this year with victory over Trailfinders. Congratulations to Karl and the team.

Next week we have the usual list of league fixtures on Saturday plus, on Sunday, the women’s team in action again plus two men’s friendlies. Please get your availabilities in asap.

We are still very short of annual subs payees, and time is running out on the early bird rate. Please do the right thing and pay up at https://www.chiswickcricketclubdragons.com/payments/senior-membership-2025-earlybird-before-may-31-130990.html. We need this income in order to pay our bills – and chasing up non-payers takes up a lot of time for the committee.

Have a good week – and let’s have the Green Sweep next week
Bernard
